Just so you know, Summer 2010 is officially Matt & Andie's Summer of Awesome Vacations—True story! It's nice, especially considering that Fall 2010 will be when I officially sell my soul to Boston University for 4+ years.
We just came back from Germany, which was awesome and fantastic, some slight emotional scarring aside. This is only the second time I've been to Germany to see my dad since he relocated there after spending 20+ years in Air Force, and it was Andie's first time there. First of all, I have to admit that seeing my dad without a crew cut or short hair, and with facial hair, too, is seriously weird. I've never seen my dad without regulation hair, ever. Even when he was a kid, my grandfather was Air Force, too, and he wore his hair short. Also, we met his sort-of girlfriend—aka his "lady friend"— which is strange, but also nice as long as I don't have to see them make out or anything.
The scariest part of the trip was a toss up between accidentally stumbling on the nude beach in Usedom (there was a great deal of pale/sunburned skin that cannot be unseen, my friends) and my dad going all "serious discussion mode" on me and asking about kids and marriage and that whole deal. I'm pretty sure I didn't breathe for a good two minutes. Thankfully, he seemed okay—even relieved, honestly—that it's not in our plans. This could be a reflection on how I let all the houseplants die that one time when I was seventeen & staying by myself when he was deployed for a month during summer vacation. On the awesome side, we got to do many cool things, and we also had dinner with the parents of my "best friend" from when we lived on Ramstein, which was weird in a fun way. He's living in Springfield, MA, of all places, so we're supposed to meet up & see how old we've gotten. It'll be fun.
Sadly, I'm back to work until the end of July when we go to Vegas. Am I rubbing in our vacations? Possibly, but I'm a man preparing to work an eighteen hour 12 AM-6PM shift, so I'm willing to play dirty. Try to see Andie and/or me this week to get your awesome, not-at-all-tacky souvenir.
